An easy way to create a French Polished finish

It's often not worth a professional French polisher working on site to carry out a small job such as repolishing a handrail. Its just as well then that this is the sort of task that builders can carry out for themselves.

Making a start

The old finish will need removing first using Finney’s Extra Strength Trade Stripper which should be neutralised using White Spirits. Fine sand the surface ready for repolishing.

Next decide whether you want a high shine (use FINPOL Easy Polish - original) or a satin sheen (use FINPOL Easy Polish - reduced shine).

What to do

1. Apply a thin coat of FINPOL Easy Polish by brush or Polishing Mop, working along the grain.
2. Lightly cut back each coat of polish when dry with a piece of 400 grade Lubrisil Paper.
3. Wipe off any fine dust created with a Tack Cloth.
4. Apply as many coats of FINPOL Easy Polish as is needed (even one if you like) up to a maximum of six, bearing in mind that each coat will produce an increase in shine. Never apply more than three coats in one day.
5. For a silkier finish, apply Finney’s Superior Finishing Wax with a pad of Ultra Fine 0000 grade Steel Wool buffing with an Extra Soft Polishing Cloth after a few minutes.
