Cleaning old woodwork ready for re-waxing
Often old woodwork needs cleaning before refinishing with wax polish. Here are a few key points:
- If the old finish is wax polish, cleaning will lighten the shade so you will most likely need to use a staining wax to restore the colour. Test on a small area first.
- Dirt, grease and grime can be cleaned from the surface using Liberon Wax Polish Remover applied along the grain with a pad of Ultra Fine 0000 grade Steel Wool.
- Cracked French Polish and shellac varnish can be restored using Heavy Duty Cleaner before rewaxing.
- Sealed surfaces (eg French polish / varnish) should be waxed with Finney’s Superior Finishing Wax - (Antique on dark woods). For bare wood use Fiddes Supreme Wax or Briwax Original. For a higher shine use Harrells High Carnauba Wax.
- Damaged varnished finishes will require stripping prior to waxing, staining and waxing, or staining, sealing and waxing. For best results use Finney’s Extra Strength Trade Stripper to remove the old finish.
